Gerber Octane Review and Gerber Knives

!±8± Gerber Octane Review and Gerber Knives

Overview

The Gerber Octane Multi-Tool is an excellent performing multi tool that would be a great addition to any workman's belt. It features 9 tools that are packaged into a small, slim, lightweight, and ergonomic design to provide the highest level of comfort in a tool that can go anywhere and is used everyday. It's really an amazing feat that Gerber was able to fir 9 full functioning tools into the 4 inch Octane Multi-Tool. Upon inspecting the Multi-tool closely you will first notice that it is extremely thin. Gerber had a few goals when they developed the Gerber Octane Multi-Tool and covertness was one of them. You should also immediately notice that the utility knife blade is placed outside the main body of the tool. An outer pocket clip mimics the blade protrusion on the other side of the handle. All of these might seem odd at first but once the Gerber Octane is in your hand and you use it the awkwardness goes away and the benefits become more and more apparent. If you hold the Gerber Octane in your hand you can slide your fingers all the way across the tool so that they are touching the protruding blade. You will notice once using it that the curved ergonomic nature of the pliers allows for more leverage when trying to grip and apply torque using a lot of force.

The pliers feature a flat tip that has no spacing between it. it also features a small serrated grip area followed by a larger serrated gripping area. In the middle of the pliers you will find the standard wire cutter blades that also have no gap between them. The main knife blade is 2.5 inch extremely sharp fine edge knife blade. Moving to the bottom of the blade is a 3/4 inch serrated blade that allows you to take advantage of the serrations without giving up much fine edge. The 2.5 inch blade is long enough that it will do a nice job substituting a pocket knife if you don;t have one available. One the handle of the knife are the thumb holes which give you a nice secure method of deploying the tools if you are right handed. The liner locking device, which is s staple of Gerber products, protects from accidentally closing the tools on your fingers.

The bottom of the tool features 4 handy tools; a small Phillips head screwdriver, a small flat head screwdriver, a large flat head screwdriver, and a retail box opening tool which does an excellent job of getting the box open without causing damage the product inside the package. Most people don't realize it but there is also a bottle opener on the Gerber Octan Multi-Tool. Turn the tool over and you will see two small protruding areas on which one of them will have a bottle symbol. Slide the bottle symbol under the cap of your beverage and twist to to enjoy some of that cold nectar. The Octane does not come with a sheath, but rather a pocket clip that rides nicely and deeply into your pocket for maximum covertness. The Octane has all of these great features and it is back by an incredible Gerber warranty and is made in the USA. The Gerber Octane Multi-Tool comes in red and grey.

Features
One-hand opening Compact, lightweight design New retail package opener component Pocket clip for easy carry Available in Grey or Red

Specifications
Overall Length: 5.5" Closed Length: 4" Weight: 5 oz Opening Style: One-hand opening Components: 9 Stainless Steel - Satin Finish

Conclusion

The Gerber Octane is an extremely lightweight and ergonomic tool. It is extremely slim and has enough function that it can act as a fully functional tool as well as a pocket knife. The ergonomic nature of the tool does take some getting used to but once you get over the fact that it "just feels different" you will realize what the designers were thinking when they designed the tool. You will also notice that it really provides more leverage when squeezing and applying torque that the standard straight handle tool. It really is a fully functioning tool that will not require you to adjust yourself more than is reasonable for a lot of capabilities. The safety features on the knife provide for one handed opening and protection for your hands and fingers. The designers at Gerber even added a few bells and whistles in the bottle opener and the pocket clip that helps to hide the tool. I think the Octane is a solid performer that has several functions in a slim design that really will change the way you look at such a small multi-tool. If that isn't enough or you are still concerned by the Gerber Octane quality, don't be.....it's made in the USA and the warranty is Gerber quality. Enjoy.

Gerber Basic Review and Gerber Knives

!±8± Gerber Basic Review and Gerber Knives

Overview

The Gerber Basic is a rock solid fixed blade fine edge knife that feels and looks simple, but it is quite complex with all of the included features. The Basic features a 3.40 inch fine edge blade with a serrated edge that takes up just less than half of the knife blade. The knife length is about 6.60 inches long and 6.80 inches long with the sheath included. The handle of the knife has a groove for the index finger and features smaller grooves for the rest of your fingers. The bottom of the knife has a protruding edge that is used to keep your hand on the blade when cutting. The groove combined with the protruding edge make this extremely stable in your hand and that allows you to really get at it without feeling as though you could slice your hand and/or fingers open. The handle also features a combination metal and rubber bevel that help to fill in your palm and give the knife some substance to hold on to. The bevel only covers a portion of the knife handle so you will be able to grip yourself on the actual knife blade itself. The bottom of the knife has a bottle opener on it that could also dub as a link for some sort of clip to keep the knife accessible. The top of the knife has three sharp grooves that can be used to scrape your game or any wood that you might need to mold into shape. The Gerber Basic is extremely sturdy, useful, and accessible. The knife blade is as sharp as they come and thick so it will never waiver no matter what you are trying to cut through.

Features

Reversible pocket clip for right or left carry Knife locks into sheath for secure tip up or tip down carry

Specifications

Open Length: 6.60" Blade Length: 3.40" Closed Length: 6.80" Weight: 3.77 oz Sheath: Rigid Handle Material: TacHide

Conclusion

The Gerber Basic Knife is an excellent tool because of it sturdiness and because of it accessibility. I would highly recommend this knife if you are a serious camper, hiker, or even hunter. While I feel the knife would probably be better suited for a hiker, I certainly would have no problems recommending it as an alternative knife for a hunter who goes after large game. The knife has a novel design and really look more modern then what Gerber used to make. The sheath is also made of plastic and it allows you to clip the knife to your side in a tip up, tip down, or sideways position. This Gerber Basic is very similar to the Gerber Epic. Try the Basic or the Epic! They are both made in the USA and also enjoy Gerber's tremendous warranty. Enjoy!

!±8± Gerber Multi-Plier 800 Legend and Gerber Knives

Overview

The Gerber Multi-Plier 800 Legend is one of the most convenient and advanced multi-tools that you can find on the market. Gerber invested heavily into the advanced technologies into this tool in order to make it small, lightweight, but yet useful and durable. The tool offers one handed opening of the knife blade. You can also access all of the blades without having to open the tool. The knife blades are standard for a tool of this caliber and prices range. There are several screwdrivers on this tool including the standard flat head and phillips head screwdriver. The selection of blades is adequate but this tool does not include a full serrated edge blade. The fine edge blade might be a little too fine. It also includes a saw edge that is useful for small jobs and serves it's purpose on the tool for it's utility and convenience. The tool does not offer a ruler, which is common among other multi-tools, but we can overlook that feature even though find it extremely useful at times. The jaws on the pliers have ample room to open, however there have been some complaints about the jaws not opening wide enough. There has to be some sacrifice in order to make such a compact and convenient tool

The handle on the Gerber Multi-Tool 800 Legend is a masterpiece. It is made of stellar stainless steel and contoured aluminum. The handle also has tactile rubber inserts that insure your steady grip. These are the primary elements of what is generally considered to be the ultimate expression of the Gerber Multi-Tool. Being versatile wasn't enough for the guys who designed these tools. They worked hard to deliver a level of ergonomics and comfort that is rarely, if ever, seen. The pliers are spring-loaded, as you'd expect. The ballistic nylon sheath is included, which is no surprise. However the tungsten carbide wire cutting blades are replaceable, which you might not expect.

Conclusion

The Gerber Multi-Pliers 800 Legend is an advanced tool with many different features. It boats several knife blades, multiple screwdrivers, a saw and many other tools. It provides one handed opening and a sturdy pair of pliers to go along with that. The metals are all stainless steel and are high quality to ensure that there is no rust and/or wear while rubbing against other metals. The handle also boats an ergonomic design as well as rubber inserts that allow you to have a secure confident grip on your tool. The Legend 800 is like no other multi-tool on the market. Gerber has made superb advancements in the multi-tool that separate it from the other other tools. Is this the best multi-tool money can buy. Yes! Well, at least we think so.
